Why book direct?
The home you found on Airbnb or Vrbo is almost always managed by a local company you can book with directly — same house, same dates, no platform service fee.
Where the extra money goes
When you book through a major platform, the price you pay is more than the owner's nightly rate. The platforms add a guest service fee on top of the subtotal — a percentage that scales with the cost of your stay — plus, in many cases, the manager pays a host-side commission that gets baked into the rate itself. None of that money goes to the property, the cleaning, or the person who hands you the keys. It pays for the website you booked on.
Who actually runs the place
The majority of well-run vacation rentals aren't managed by the platforms — and often not even by the owner. They're run by professional local property management companies: businesses with offices, staff, cleaners, and someone who answers the phone when the hot tub stops working at 9pm. These companies list on the big platforms for visibility, but nearly all of them also take bookings on their own websites — usually at a better total price, because there's no platform in the middle.
How to do it
Identify the manager
Check the host profile name, photo watermarks, or the welcome book photos — or paste the listing link into our free lookup tool and we'll find them for you.
Verify they're real
Look for a working website, a local phone number, reviews under the company's own name, and — on this site — the Verified badge, which means we've manually reviewed their identity documents.
Book direct
Book on their site or by phone. Get the rental agreement in writing and pay by credit card. Same property, same protections you'd expect anywhere — minus the platform's cut.
Apply normal consumer sense.
Direct booking is how this industry worked for decades — but book with companies you can verify, insist on a written agreement, and always pay by credit card so chargeback protection applies. Treat a request for a wire transfer, crypto, or gift cards as the scam signal it is, on any website. Our Safety Center covers how we vet the agencies listed here.
